An Amazing Find

Thanks for swinging by – I appreciate it!

I bumped into Horace Kephart’s The Book of Camping and Woodcraft years ago as I was learning about bushcraft and was instantly mesmerized by how it transported me back to the late 1800’s and early 1900’s; his writing still echoes in today’s world.  Instantly in sync with Mr. Kephart’s writing and philosophy, it resonated loudly with me by providing descriptions of simple, but well-studied and honed advice for the average person to be prepared for relative comfort while enjoying the great outdoors.  Take a quick moment to learn a bit more about Mr. Kephart on his Wikipedia page.

If you’ve not had the pleasure of reading The Book of Camping and Woodcraft, we’re all super-lucky that the 1912 edition, among others, is in the public domain and can be downloaded from the U.S. Library of Congress for free.  If you enjoy the outdoors, I strongly encourage you to download it and start enjoying it today.  Mr. Kephart discusses his sheath knife philosophy and experiences on Page 28 of the 1912 edition, which is on page 52 of the PDF available from the Library of Congress’ website linked above.  This knife has been an inspiration to many and is the basic blade profile used in SlicKnives’ Kepper 5.

On a related note, the picture above shows an original 1906 edition in remarkable condition for its age that I had the good fortune of bumping into while browsing eBay one day recently.  I cherish this 118-year-old book and will take good care of it for the next lucky person to enjoy sometime in the future.  What an amazing find!

For those not familiar, please, take time to go down the Horace Kephart rabbit hole – you won’t regret the journey!
